Derron Bishop to lead IU School of Medicine-Muncie

INDIANAPOLIS — Derron L. Bishop, Ph.D., has been named interim director of the Indiana University School of Medicine-Muncie campus and interim associate dean at IU School of Medicine. He began his new duties Sept. 1.

Dr. Bishop, an adjunct associate professor of cellular and integrative physiology at IU School of Medicine-Muncie, joined the IU faculty in 2002. He is the director of the physiology course at the Muncie medical education program.

A native of Canton, Ill., Dr. Bishop completed a master’s degree in physiology at Ball State University and a doctorate in neurosciences from Washington University in St. Louis. A dedicated educator, Dr. Bishop received an IU Trustee Teaching Award in 2008 and was named the Outstanding Professor in Basic Sciences in 2013.

The IU School of Medicine-Muncie is one of the nine campuses where IU medical students are taught basic and clinical science. Other medical education campuses are in Bloomington, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Lafayette, Northwest (Gary), South Bend and Terre Haute.

Dr. Bishop succeeds T. Stuart Walker, Ph.D., who served as associate dean and director since 2006. Dr. Walker will continue teaching at IU School of Medicine-Muncie as a professor of microbiology and immunology and as course director for microbiology and immunology.
