Cardiothoracic Surgery Residency

The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at the Indiana University School of Medicine offers two different residency training pathways: the Three-Year Traditional Program and the Six-Year Integrated Program. Both pathways provide comprehensive cardiothoracic surgical education and training through a full range of clinical environments. Graduates of the residency are eligible to sit for the American Board of Thoracic Surgery examinations.

Program Goals

  • Train residents to be safe, competent, independent practitioners of adult cardiothoracic surgery upon completion of the residency program
  • Provide comprehensive clinical education that can serve as a foundation for those residents who wish to pursue advanced fellowship training in a sub-specialty area
  • Prepare graduates to successfully attain the American Board of Thoracic Surgery certification
  • Enable residents to critically evaluate and interpret scientific evidence and literature to guide clinical practice and continue lifelong self-education
  • Foster opportunities for stewardship and leadership in the cardiothoracic surgical community both locally and nationally

An exceptional experience

The cardiothoracic training program offers graduates experience in clinical and surgical decision-making with broad exposure to all three cardiothoracic sub-disciplines of Adult Cardiac, Pediatric/ Congenital Cardiothoracic and General Thoracic. Inherent to the success of the program is a culture of respect and accountability.

Formal educational activities include didactic conferences, surgical skills simulation sessions, board examination review and mock oral examinations. Residents are expected to take advantage of the university academic environment and participate in clinical outcomes research and/or quality improvement projects during their tenure.
