Gustavo is an Assistant Dean for for Faculty Affairs Professional Development Diversity and holds an academic appointment in Pharmacology and Toxicology as a Professor. He also holds an appointment in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology. He is also the Director of Trainee Recruitment, Development and Diversity in the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology. Gustavo earned a Bachelor in Science in Biochemistry from Haverford College and a PhD in Biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He performed a Post-doctoral fellowship in Molecular Parasitology at Stanford University School of Medicine.

Gustavo’s focuses his efforts in the Office of Diversity Affairs on the development of learners and trainees from populations underrepresented in the biomedical fields. He enjoys working with graduate and medical students, post-doctoral fellow and medical residents to help them achieve their professional and career goals. Gustavo is committed to promoting an open, just and inclusive culture that allows for the success and wellness of our students and trainees.

Dr. Henderson earned her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Louisville. She completed both her pre-doctoral clinical internship and postdoctoral fellowship at Indiana University School of Medicine. Her postdoctoral fellowship in Clinical Health Psychology emphasized Cardiac-Pulmonary Behavioral Medicine. In October 2018, she began her clinical-track faculty position in the Department of Psychiatry at Indiana University School of Medicine. Dr. Henderson works as a clinician and supervisor in a variety of clinical settings at IU School of Medicine and IU Health, including the Advanced Pain Therapies Clinic, integrated care, and the Adult Outpatient Psychiatry Clinic. She is the Co-Principal Investigator for two studies supported by the Racial Justice Research Fund at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. One project aims to examine the impact of discriminatory law enforcement exposure and childhood trauma on physical and mental health and quality of life in adult Black men and women in a primary care setting. The other project aims to examine an intervention for schoolchildren following lead exposure.

Dr. Henderson is committed to diversity work. She brings this passion to her role as a member of the IU School of Medicine Psychology Internship Program’s Executive Committee, spearheading diversity efforts. Additionally, she co-chairs the Department of Psychiatry’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee and the Indiana Psychological Association’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee.

Christi is a diversity professional who brings experience in helping major corporations foster brave spaces that are inclusive. She has experience in inclusive leadership, a master facilitator, and project management, curriculum and program design for adult learners. Christi’s motto is: “I am passionate about people because people matter.”

Christi enjoys spending time with her spouse traveling and watching home improvement shows.

Chemen Neal, MD, works closely with academic, research and clinical leaders across the school to advance DEIJ strategic priorities for students, trainees, faculty and staff. As a member of the dean’s senior executive team, Dr. Neal serves as an institutional thought leader, contributing across mission areas. Initially in her role, she will be working toward establishing metrics to help school leadership gain a greater understanding of key areas including retention and belonging, as well as focusing on the diversification of faculty. Dr. Neal is an associate clinical professor and the wellness director for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Constance Skinner is a PhD candidate in IU’s Higher Education & Student Affairs (HESA) program where her research examines teacher preparation for new and junior faculty during their doctoral programs. Having over 13 years of undergraduate teaching experience, Constance has taught multiple topics like women’s health, human sexuality, stress management, preparation for K12 health teachers, personal health, public speaking, and more.

She worked alongside the former dean at IU-Bloomington School of Education, Dr. Gerardo Gonzalez, designing curriculum and leading a team of graduate instructors for underrepresented, high-ability freshmen in an academic-driven scholarship program. She mapped curricular programming for the first undergraduate certificate in HESA in the country with IUB’s School of Education. Having served the IU School of Medicine as an instructional design intern since 2020, she served several faculty by encouraging creative ways to teach and learn in virtual spaces and facilitating faculty development workshops. Her favorite type of work is integrating diversity and inclusivity in “the classroom” and curriculum, while decoding disciplinary learning, to enhance equity and justice efforts in all environments.

Tiffinie obtained her BA at Wright State University (Dayton, OH) in Anthropology with a certificate in Cultural Diversity in Healthcare. Originally from Cleveland, OH, she moved to Memphis, TN to pursue her MA in Applied Anthropology with a medical concentration at the University of Memphis, which she completed in 2020.

Alvaro Tori, MD, FAAP, is Associate Dean of Diversity Affairs for Faculty Affairs, Professional Development and Diversity. He practices medicine in the pediatric critical care unit at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health and IU School of Medicine. He’s enthusiastic about his position in Diversity Affairs because it affords him the opportunity to increase representational diversity, inclusive working and learning environment, and cultural competency and humility training through his efforts with strategic programming at IU School of Medicine. Mentoring a diverse group of students, residents, fellows and faculty, Dr. Tori considers it a personal mission to influence the next generation of practitioners and ensure diversity among their ranks. His personal experience, as both a native of Peru and a member of the LGBTQ community, enables him to truly understand the meaning of diversity and the importance of its acceptance. In his free time, Dr. Tori enjoys family activities with his husband, son and daughter and loves traveling back to Peru where he can share his Peruvian heritage.
