Clinical Research at Krannert Institute of Cardiology

Cardiology research at Indiana University School of Medicine is committed to understanding, advancing, and improving cardiology care and treatment through groundbreaking research in science and medicine. Through forward thinking research, investigators gain insights and answers about the safety and effectiveness of drugs to develop ever improving treatment interventions.

Groundbreaking and innovative scientific advances in the present and the past were possible only because of active volunteer participation of patients and their families. IU’s vision led to several breakthroughs in the field of heart disease, which then provided several newer treatment options. Physicians find better ways to understand and treat cardiovascular diseases through phase I to phase III research. Having the level of care that Krannert cardiology research is able to provide means each patient is getting a team approach to care and research.

Active Research

Amyloidosis

This is a study for both men and women who have been diagnosed with amyloidosis. The purpose of the study is to obtain preliminary information about changes, or changes over time, in skin nerve activity in patients with amyloidosis with nerve problems like numbness and tingling in the hands and feet and compare that to skin nerve activity in healthy volunteers.

Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease (ASCVD)

This study is looking at the effectiveness of the drug, PCSK Inhibitors, in adults with a recent ASCVD event (myocardial infarction), stable or unstable angina, coronary or other arterial revascularization, stroke, transient ischemic attack, or peripheral arterial disease presumed to be of atherosclerotic origin. This study will assess cardiovascular events in adults who are initiated on the drug PCSKi versus those who are not.

Cardiac Rehabilitation

This study is open to men and women who will be participating in cardiac rehabilitation. Participants in this study will be asked to wear a fitness tracker for up to four months while attending the cardiac rehab sessions. The study is looking to improve cardiac rehabilitation participation for patients.

Heart Failure

Patients are asked to join this research study to discover if the study drug, sacubitril/valsartan, is safe and has beneficial effects when added to conventional heart failure therapy in patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction who have been stabilized after being admitted to the hospital for new or worsening heart failure.

Heart Transplant

This observational study is for heart transplant patients, assessing a special blood draw to possibly gain an early diagnosis of organ rejection.  Patients who have this blood drawn as part of their post-transplant management will give informed consent for information on their outcomes and other relevant clinical information.

High Cholesterol

This study is open to men and women to collect information about the blood level of a specific marker lipoprotein(a). Similar to other blood lipids such as the ‘bad cholesterol,’ lipoprotein(a) levels were found to be associated with the risk of hardening of the arteries, known as atherosclerosis, which leads to conditions such as heart attacks, stroke, or peripheral artery disease (severe pain in legs while walking or lower limb amputation).

Elise Hannemann, RN, CCRN

Elise has been a certified research nurse within IU School of Medicine, cardiology research for seven years. Elise has had extensive cardiology experience including nursing care within intensive coronary care unit, cardiology step down unit, cardiology research and cardiac rehab.

Portrait of Julie Lacy

Julie Lacy, BSN, RN

Julie has over 30 years of experience in cardiology with in-depth knowledge of interventional cardiology, women’s heart health, prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease, and treatment of acute MI. Julie’s prior work experience includes adult coronary care unit, cardiac cath lab, women’s heart program and outpatient cardiology clinic.

Clinical Research Facilities

Investigators in the Division of Cardiology have access to multiple health systems and facilities. IU Health is the largest state network, and one of the highest volume heart and vascular programs in the United States serving as a state and regional referral resource for the most complex heart and vascular issues.

Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI) is a partnership among the leading research universities of Indiana University, Purdue University, and Notre Dame, which also includes life sciences, businesses, and community organizations. Indiana CTSI engages with the public at every level of research from basic science to patient care.
