Indiana University School of Medicine is comprised of 25 academic departments that cover basic science and clinical science areas of medicine. More than 2000 faculty, 1400 medical students, 1100 residents and fellows, and approximately 200 graduate PhD students work and learn throughout these departments. The school’s relentless emphasis on advancing medical research to improve patient care and clinical outcomes inspires strong private-industry partnerships; generous funding; and vital collaborations among faculty members, departments, other health science schools at Indiana University, and other medical schools throughout the world.

Basic Science

Medical education and research at IU School of Medicine begins with basic science, the foundation of health assessment, diagnosis and treatment. Basic science researchers explore the foundations of biology, including genetics, cellular behavior, anatomy, immunology and pharmacology. Medical students are quickly challenged to apply basic science to clinical scenarios, and the school’s graduate degree programs, including a MD/PhD dual degree program, prepares both physicians and medical scientists to gain competitive skills for a successful career.
