Centers and Institutes

The Department of Medicine has initiated and participates in numerous themed research centers and institutes at IU School of Medicine, as well as with partners at the Regenstrief Institute and Richard L. Roudebush VA Medical Center. These ‘research meeting places’ have fueled much of the growth in the department’s and school’s rise in extramural funding and productivity. The following is a selected list of research centers and institutes associated with the Department of Medicine.

Center for Aging Research

A collaborative effort between the Indiana University School of Medicine and the Regenstrief Institute, the Center for Aging Research pursues a wide variety of research topics that affect the aging population, including brain health, decision-making, physical fitness, transitional care, nursing home care, and medication use.

Center for Bioethics

The Center for Bioethics is a gathering place for discussion, education, research, and collaboration in bioethics and related fields. Based at the IU School of Medicine, faculty from schools across IUPUI lead these efforts, guiding healthcare providers and researchers in their work and helping society confront important questions about health, science, and technology.

Indiana Center for Biological Microscopy

The Indiana Center for Biological Microscopy is a vital research core facility supporting more than 100 laboratories in Indiana and several NIH centers. Staff provide expert support in all aspects of microscopy and image analysis, train investigators to conduct sophisticated imaging studies independently, and conduct complete studies.

Brown Center for Immunotherapy

The Brown Center for Immunotherapy was established in December 2016 with a $30 million gift from Indianapolis entrepreneur and IU School of Medicine alumnus Don Brown. The mission of the Brown Center is to develop new treatments and cure disease through the use of cell-based immunotherapies.

The Center for Global Health develops mutually beneficial partnerships across disciplines, schools and countries for the primary purpose of creating and implementing sustainable programs that improve health and human flourishing in underserved areas worldwide, and preparing a critical mass of health education and health research experts in these communities to become the next generation of local, national and global health leaders.

Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center

Home to the cure of testicular cancer that has saved hundreds of thousands of lives and the world’s only healthy breast tissue bank that has served as a resource to investigators around the world to learn more about the disease, the Indiana University Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center in Indianapolis is the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health

The Indiana Center for Musculoskeletal Health was established at Indiana University School of Medicine in 2017 to address the serious need to prevent and treat musculoskeletal disease. The center’s mission is to discover and develop new treatments, cures, preventative strategies, diagnostic tools and technologies to address the increasing burden of bone, muscle and cartilage disorders.

Indiana O'Brien Center for Advanced Microscopic Analysis

The George M. O’Brien Center has developed highly interactive, integrated and synergistic team of physicians, basic scientists, computer scientists, engineers and a highly trained and committed technical support team to provide local, national and international users cutting edge intravital optical microscopy and 3-dimensional quantitative digital image analysis of the kidney.

The Indiana Institute for Personalized Medicine explores how genetic information and environmental exposure affect a person’s individual risk of developing certain diseases and their response to certain medications.

The Indiana CTSI has research partnerships with Indiana University, Purdue University, and the University of Notre Dame which also includes life sciences, businesses and community organizations. Furthermore, Indiana CTSI engages with the public at every level of research from basic science to patient care.

Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research

The Vera Bradley Foundation Center for Breast Cancer Research is focused on dramatically improving therapies for some of the most difficult-to-treat types of breast cancer. It is home to a multi-disciplinary team of more than 30 breast cancer physicians and scientists who are engaged in basic, translational and clinical research.
