Molecular Medicine in Action celebrates 25 years of inspiring young minds and fueling scientific passion

Molecular Medicine in Action's (MMIA) 25th anniversary symposium occurred on March 3 and 4, 2024, bringing 50 high school students across Indiana to Indianapolis. The program hosted by the Herman B Wells Center for Pediatric Research provided an immersive experience, offering participants insights into several medical research fields and exposing them to a spectrum of career opportunities in science from a diverse group of IU experts.

New study uncovers key cells in the heart’s link to several body systems

In a recent Nature Communications article, IU School of Medicine researchers collaborated with scientists from the UK, China and France on an investigation that uncovered an unexpected link between the cells in the heart and other systems of the body.

Andrea Conroy honored as 2023 Bailey K. Ashford Medalist 

In October 2023, Andrea Conroy, PhD, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine was honored with the prestigious Bailey K. Ashford Medal by the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH). This accolade celebrates her distinguished contributions to the field of tropical medicine.

Clinical trial presents a pill of promise for type 1 diabetes

In March 2023, 10-year-old Emmaline Swigert was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes, an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Today, Emmaline is participating in an Indiana University School of Medicine-led clinical trial aimed at testing a pill that could help make life much easier for individuals like her living with the condition.

Pediatric perspectives on low-carb diets for kids with or at risk of diabetes

In a recently published Pediatrics clinical report, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) represented by Indiana University School of Medicine professor of pediatrics Tamara Hannon, MD, examined the suitability of low-carb diets for children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes or those who are overweight and susceptible to type 2 diabetes.

Delaying diabetes: new treatment makes its mark in Indiana

In August 2023, a Riley Hospital for Children patient became the first child in Indiana to receive teplizumab, a groundbreaking therapy that delays the onset of stage 3 type 1 diabetes by an average of three years. The treatment received Federal Drug Administration approval in November 2022, three years after Indiana University School of Medicine researchers conducted clinical trials and published data that helped lead to the FDA’s decision.
