Employee Spotlight - Brandon Pieczko

Brandon Pieczko, MSLIS (Digital and Special Collections Librarian)

Digital and Special Collections Librarian

What is your position at the Ruth Lilly Medical Library?
I am the Digital and Special Collections Librarian and primarily manage the library’s History of Medicine Collection.

How long have you been working at the library?
I started in February 2020, a month before the COVID-19 pandemic began.

What do you like most about your job or the library?
I enjoy using my skills as an archivist and librarian to help students, faculty, staff, and members of the local community find the information they need to do their work, or even just satisfy their curiosity about a particular subject. My colleagues in the Medical Library and the School of Medicine, as well as others on the IUPUI campus, have been fantastic collaborators and I’ve really appreciated learning from them to become a more developed information professional better equipped to serve our patrons and their research needs.

What is your favorite food/ favorite place to eat?
I don’t eat animals and I like bold flavors, so my usual go to is Chinese, Indian, or Thai. I’m always down for pizza though and on the lookout for new pizza places to try, especially ones that deliver to my neighborhood. My newest favorite is Beech Grove Pizza Company. After ordering from them two weekends in a row, the delivery driver may have accused me of being “hooked.” Byrne's Grilled Pizza near Broad Ripple is also fantastic.

Where is your favorite place to travel?
Any place that is new to me, really. There are very few places in the world I wouldn’t want to go, and extreme destinations based on location or climate have always intrigued me. Svalbard, Norway is a place that I would like to visit in the near future. Some of my favorite places I’ve visited so far: Greece, Dublin (Ireland, not Ohio, sorry OCLC), and Paris.

If you could witness any historical event, what would it be and why?
Paul Tillich’s visit to Japan (May-June 1960) to lecture and meet with Japanese intellectuals.

What is one item on your bucket list?
Visit Goodison Park in Liverpool, UK on a match day, before it is decommissioned.

If you were to write a book about yourself, what would the title be?
Let’s Try This Again
