Carmel Egan, PhD, has been named the director for the Office of Clinical Research (OCR). As the new director, Egan will provide leadership and direction for the Office of Clinical Research, which supports the regulatory and compliance oversight for human interventional clinical research whether federally-funded and industry-sponsored interventional human subjects trials. 

New director named for Office of Clinical Research

Carmel Egan, PhD, has been named the director for the Office of Clinical Research (OCR). As the new director, Egan will provide leadership and direction for the Office of Clinical Research, which supports the regulatory and compliance oversight for human interventional clinical research whether federally-funded and industry-sponsored interventional human subjects trials. The OCR is a collaboration among Indiana University, IU Health, and the Indiana Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute (CTSI). Egan also serves as associate dean for research affairs at IU School of Medicine and operations director for the IU Grand Challenge Precision Health Initiative.

In her new role, Egan will develop and implement a strategic vision for the enterprise, as well as provide administrative oversight for the staff and resources at the Office of Clinical Research. She will also contribute to the development of policies and procedures to ensure quality service, compliant conduct, and increased clinical trial participation across the organization. Egan will work with clinical leaders, stakeholders and collaborators to facilitate implementation of strategic priorities and plans with the office’s statewide partners, including IU School of Medicine, IU Health, the Indiana CTSI, and the IU Melvin and Bren Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center Clinical Trials Office (CTO).

Egan has also served as the chief operating officer of the Indiana CTSI. Before joining IU School of Medicine in 2016, Egan held a series of senior leadership positions at Eli Lilly and Company, including vice president of special Alzheimer’s disease initiatives and vice president of the portfolio and project management group. She received her PhD in chemistry from the University College Dublin in Ireland.

The Office of Clinical Research (OCR) serves as the single point of entry for interventional human subjects research across Indiana University, providing streamlined services for contracting, budgeting, and study support (OnCore services for tracking and participant payments, coordinator and recruitment services, study coverage analyses, billing assistance and more), as well as metric tracking and study facilitation.
