Emergency Medicine Clerkship

All phase three students at IU School of Medicine are required to complete the emergency medicine clerkship. This rotation is popular among students and offers them the opportunity to serve as the primary caregiver for patients while working closely with faculty and residents.

Students must successfully complete all required phase two clerkships as a prerequisite for the emergency medicine rotation. During the rotation, students work approximately 14 nine-hour shifts over the 4-week rotation.  In addition to their clinical shifts, students are also provided focused lectures and a question bank to aid in their knowledge and studies for the associated NBME exam. Clinical sites are available for rotation at all IU School of Medicine campuses across the state.

Visiting Clerkship

The Visiting Clerkship program is frequently recognized by students as having the best clinical learning environment and bedside educators. Scholarships are also available for students who are underrepresented in medicine.

Welcome to the Department of Emergency Medicine

Visiting Students

During the IU School of Medicine emergency medicine fourth-year clerkship (Emergency Medicine elective 93ZE720), students push themselves to work independently and participate in every aspect of patient care in a safe, supervised and collegial environment. Students have the opportunity to work directly with internationally recognized emergency medicine leaders in research, toxicology, ultrasound, EMS, pediatrics, administration, critical care and medical education. Rotating at one of two Level 1 trauma centers in downtown Indianapolis, students are exposed to a wide variety of pathologies and given a high level of autonomy. Department of Emergency Medicine faculty and staff strive to provide all visiting students with a rewarding and unique experience. Interested students may email Jim Graber-Slater, Department of Emergency Medicine student coordinator, with questions.
