Better Models to Study Alzheimer’s Disease

To date, success rates of Alzheimer’s disease drugs in clinical trials after testing in animal models have been disappointing. While existing mouse models for the disease have provided important insights in aspects of Alzheimer’s disease biology, they have not sufficiently modeled the disease for accurate use in preclinical studies.

Model Organism Development and Evaluation for Late-Onset Alzheimer’s Disease (MODEL-AD) seeks to break this bottleneck in developing new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease. By developing the next generation of animal models, MODEL-AD provides the key to translating research discoveries into new Alzheimer’s disease therapies. The MODEL-AD consortium, established by the National Institute on Aging, brings together experts at Indiana University School of Medicine, Jackson Laboratory, the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and Sage Bionetworks

Providing the Foundation to Improve Research Globally

The resources created by the MODEL-AD consortium fuel research beyond the expert teams at IU School of Medicine. All animal models, protocols and validation data are rapidly available to all researchers for preclinical drug development. Courses and workshops address training gaps in preclinical drug screening and provide researchers with hands-on, practical laboratory skills required for rigorous design, execution, analysis and reporting of in vivo experiments.
