Rotations

Infectious Diseases fellows at IU School of Medicine will experience a diverse patient population and clinical case set during their time in the program. This is reinforced by the required clinical rotations that fellows will take part in over 24 months. Eleven months of rotations will take place at four different hospitals and clinical learning locations: four months at Eskenazi Hospital, three months at VA Hospital, two months at Indiana University Hospital, and one month at Methodist Hospital. Learn more about the individual hospitals. Fellows are also required to do one month of clinical microbiology rotations. Additionally, fellows will receive four weeks of vacation time per year, amounting to two months of vacation time total.

In addition to the eleven months of required rotations, fellows also have the opportunity to personalize their experience through different clinical tracks. Ten months of service are dedicated to a fellow’s chosen clinical track. Fellows can choose one of several different tracks, including infection prevention, antimicrobial stewardship, global health, medical education, critical, private practice, or HIV/hepatitis/STIs. Sample Schedules

Due to the individualized nature of the fellowship, there are many different ways a fellow’s schedule could look. Below are several examples of different schedules for rotations, clinical conference, and other features of the program. Several mock fellows are included on each schedule to help interested applicants better understand how schedules interact with each other.

Program Highlights

The Infectious Diseases fellowship program provides several unique opportunities to improve fellows’ experiences and learning prospects. Fellows are provided iPad minis to assist in their learning and also receive expense coverage for infectious diseases board review classes. The weekly clinical conference provides a fun atmosphere to review and hold case based discussion, with faculty facing off versus fellows in a stump the audience style review. Weekly board reviews utilize game based learning and clinical reasoning, and special antimicrobial lectures are offered from PharmDs just for fellows. Continuity Clinic takes place for half a day each week when at Eskenazi Hospital to review HIV and general infectious diseases practices.
