Guest Medical Students

Medical students enrolled at qualifying schools in the United States and Puerto Rico are eligible to apply for guest student elective study at Indiana University School of Medicine. MD or DO students interested in taking electives at IU School of Medicine can visit the AAMC/VSLO website for information and how to apply.

IU School of Medicine also offers the Inclusive Excellence Visiting Elective Program for 4th year medical students and qualified 3rd year medical students attending a U.S. medical school including U.S. territories, from underrepresented backgrounds in medicine. Please visit the program website for more details and how to apply.

Application requirements

In addition to the VSLO application, guest students must submit the following application materials at some point during the process:

Immunization Form

IU School of Medicine only accepts the AAMC Standardized Immunization Form, no exceptions. This form can be printed or downloaded from the VSLO site and must be completed and signed by the applicant’s physician or a qualified health care provider. A fully up-to-date immunization form must be uploaded at least 45 days prior to the start of the elective. If any part of the guest student’s immunization form is out of date, processing of the application will be delayed or possibly revoked.

Test Scores

Applicants must upload a copy of their USMLE STEP 1 or COMLEX LEVEL 1 board score. Some IU School of Medicine departments will not review guest student applications without this information.

Application Processing Fee

An application processing fee of $60 is due upon the guest student’s acceptance of an elective offer. This payment will be made online via the IU Event link on the IU School of Medicine Online Payment Portal. Students receive information about payment with the VSLO offer.
