Adult Neurology Residency Curriculum

Year One

The first year of the Adult Neurology Residency at Indiana University School of Medicine emphasizes clinical evaluation and management of patients at four adult hospitals and the children’s hospital and outpatient clinics on the school’s Indianapolis campus. The goal of the first year is to obtain clinical competence in general neurology.

  1. The Diagnostic Testing rotation at Roudebush VA Medical Center includes an electroencephalogram/electromyography primer to introduce the new resident to these ancillary diagnostic tests.
  2. The outpatient experience at IU Health Neuroscience Center includes one-week in the Neuromuscular Clinic, one week in the Multiple Sclerosis Clinic, one week in the Movement Disorder Clinic and one week in Neuro-oncology.
  3. The rotation at Eskenazi Hosptial includes experience in the Emergency Neurology Clinic.

Year Two

The second year of residency training emphasizes the foundations of clinical neuroscience.

2 months comprehensive course in neuroanatomy
3 months clinical electrophysiology Time is split between the electromyography laboratory and the electroencephalogram laboratory.

2 months inpatient consultation Experience prepares residents for senior leadership.

During the one month on neuroradiology, residents work with one of the senior neuroradiologists. Neuroimaging technology includes computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, magnetic resonance angiogram, angiography single photon emission computed tomography, positron emission tomography and interventional techniques.

Year Three

During the third year, the senior Adult Neurology resident assumes a role with greater decision-making responsibility in the clinical setting. These residents enhance their teaching skills with greater roles in the ward, clinic and lecture settings.
