Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery Research

Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology faculty physicians are researching the latest minimally invasive gynecologic surgery methods. The division’s research aims to enhance post-operative recovery while improving the surgical experience for people with many conditions.

In this project, our multidisciplinary surgical team plans to develop a robust robotic curriculum to optimize the learning of residents, fellows, attending physicians and members of the robotics OR team. We plan to pilot our developed template across six surgical subspecialties, studying the value of a standardized robotics curriculum in optimizing surgical skill progression, operative efficiency and clinical outcomes. We hypothesize that implementing a robotics surgery curriculum for trainees, practicing surgeons and OR staff will lead to superior technical performance compared to traditional training, thus improving patient care.

The primary goal of this study is to evaluate the proportion of participants who experience new onset or worsening chronic lower abdominal and/or pelvic pain and have undergone Essure placement for permanent birth control compared to the proportion of participants who had an attempt at laparoscopic tubal sterilization. Researchers also want to characterize these reported outcomes better and identify pre-procedural and procedure-related characteristics related to their occurrence.

The goal of this study is to determine if liposomal bupivacaine TAP blocks reduce postoperative opioid requirements and improve postoperative pain scores in patients undergoing laparoscopic hysterectomy for large uterine pathology that necessitates morcellation of the specimen via an extended umbilical incision.
