Neonatal Lung and Airway Specialty Care

The Neonatal Lung and Airway Specialty Care Program was developed to serve the needs of newborns and young infants with lung and airway problems requiring interdisciplinary care. IU School of Medicine faculty are dedicated to preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), providing interdisciplinary inpatient and outpatient care for patients with severe BPD and caring for patients with airway issues requiring supplemental oxygen or procedures to be safely discharged from the hospital. We provide exceptional, team-based, coordinated care for babies in a supportive, culturally responsive environment while fostering familial partnership.

Population served are patients with:

  • BPD
  • BPD associated pulmonary hypertension
  • BPD associated pulmonary venous stenosis
  • Pulmonary hypoplasia
  • Tracheomalacia
  • Tongue-based airway obstruction
  • Micrognathia

Services:

  • Expert team-based care for infants at risk for BPD, with BPD, and with airway disease
  • Structured ventilator assessments to optimize respiratory support
  • Full range of non-invasive respiratory support devices to minimize use of invasive mechanical ventilation
  • Diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy
  • Collaboration with ENT for comprehensive airway evaluation
  • Virtual Consultations for inpatients at other institutions
