Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine faculty at IU School of Medicine provide clinical services in a variety of locations throughout Indiana, and the division consistently ranks in the top 15 on the annual U.S. News and World Report list of Best Children’s Hospitals. The children who receive care from this pediatric specialty team come from cities and towns throughout Indiana and the United States.

Accomplished Pulmonary, Allergy and Sleep Experts

Highly experienced physicians, nurses and other team members work with children and families to design treatment and follow-up care that are effective and sustainable. The pediatric pulmonology, allergy and sleep services services of this team include specialized programs for children with cystic fibrosis, sleep disorders, asthma, allergies, chronic lung disease of prematurity, primary ciliary dyskinesia, home ventilation needs, airway difficulties, pulmonary hypertension and other respiratory problems.

Faculty in this pediatric specialty division have contributed to defining and improving clinical care through participation in Cystic Fibrosis Foundation committees, including the Center Committee and Registry Committee; Cystic Fibrosis Foundation and American Thoracic Society clinical practice guidelines; and Food Allergy Research and Education (FARE) Center of Clinical Excellence. Faculty have held leadership positions in the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Thoracic Society, American Board of Pediatrics, Society of Pediatric Research and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

Advanced Technology

The Division of Pediatric Pulmonology, Allergy and Sleep Medicine provides valuable resources for physicians and their patients throughout Indiana. Among the team’s most significant support programs is the pediatric pulmonary function laboratory at IU School of Medicine, where testing in children as well as infants and preschoolers is conducted. This laboratory serves as a national leader in infant and preschool lung function testing.

Other programs include the large bronchoscopy program, which provides specialized services to children needing airway evaluation, and the metabolic and exercise testing programs, which assist in evaluating the causes of children’s breathing difficulties. The sleep program performs more than 400 sleep studies a year on infants. One of the largest programs of its kind in the world, the program has considerable experience in managing sleep disorders in infants and has presented and published this experience in research journals.
