Trauma and Emergency Radiology Fellowship

The Trauma Emergency Radiology Fellowship Program at Indiana University School of Medicine is a one-year, non-ACGME-accredited program that provides experience and training for those interested in furthering their careers as emergency radiologists. Subject-matter experts mentor fellows throughout this year-long program.

NRMP Match

The Trauma and Emergency Radiology Fellowship is participating in the NRMP match interview cycle for candidates who plan to do a fellowship in 2021-22.

Program Requirements

Applicants to this program must have an MD or DO degree from an LCME-accredited institution and have completed an ACGME-accredited residency in diagnostic radiology before the first day of fellowship. Applicants must be eligible for board certification or certified by the American Board of Radiology and must be qualified to obtain licensure in the state of Indiana.

Selection of applicants is based on a review of all required submitted documentation, relative academic strength and other criteria determined by the program director in consultation with other faculty members in the division. Qualified applicants are invited for a personal interview with the program director and other faculty members in the division. Interviews are conducted on an on-going basis.

Facilities and Equipment

The fellowship training is based primarily at IU Health Methodist Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the United States and the busiest Level 1 trauma center in Indiana. Methodist Hospital sees an estimated 100,000 patients each year, including more 3500 trauma evaluations.

Curriculum

Training for the Trauma and Emergency Radiology Fellowship program is based primarily at IU Health Methodist Hospital, one of the largest hospitals in the United States and the busiest Level 1 trauma center in Indiana. Methodist Hospital sees an estimated 100,000 patients each year, including more than 4000 trauma evaluations. The IU Health Level 1 trauma centers, including Eskenazi Health Hospital and Riley Hospital for Children, evaluate more than 250,000 patients each year, which includes more than 6500 trauma patients.

This fellowship program provides an intensive and comprehensive experience in the imaging evaluation of acutely ill and injured patients. Fellows gain experience in radiologic interpretation and provide subspecialty consultation to clinicians who provide care for patients evaluated in the Emergency Medicine and Trauma Center (EMTC). Fellows in this program interpret radiographs, CT, MRI and ultrasound as part of the imaging evaluation of patients.

Clinical research is important for the continued growth of the Trauma and Emergency Radiology subspecialty, which is why fellows at IU School of Medicine are expected to actively participate in research. Each Trauma and Emergency Radiology fellow is assigned a faculty member to serve as a research mentor. This relationship enables the fellow to be a major contributor in a manuscript to be submitted for peer-reviewed publication.

Fellows in this training program support the academic mission of the Emergency Radiology section by teaching medical students, residents and other referring physicians—both formally and informally. Time and support are provided for fellows to develop both didactic and case conference lectures for presentation to the radiology residents. As a recent graduate of an ACGME-accredited program in diagnostic radiology, fellows in this program are a valuable resource for mid- and upper-level residents as they prepare for the American Board of Radiology qualifying exam.

Call Responsibilities

Trauma and Emergency Radiology fellows are scheduled for 160 hours of supervised call within the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences divisions of Neuroradiology and Musculoskeletal Radiology.
