Endourology Stones Fellowship

IU School of Medicine Department of Urology offers a one or two-year fellowship in stone disease and BPH at IU Health Methodist Hospital. Fellows applying for a two-year position will be given preferential consideration over one-year applicants. The focus of the fellowship is to develop future academic endourologists and elevate the standard of care for stone disease and BPH. The fellowship provides extensive clinical and research experience in all aspects of kidney stone disease. The fellowship also provides a unique opportunity to learn and master Holmium Laser Enucleation of the Prostate (HoLEP).

Two fellows are matched each year, for a potential total of four fellows in the program at a time. Fellows rotate with fellowship director Marcelino Rivera, MD and other staff endourologists. The fellowship is open to urologists who have completed residency training and are eligible for a state medical license. The program is organized and approved by the Endourology Society. Find details and application forms through the Endourology Society.

First-Year Curriculum

The first year of this fellowship program is dedicated to mastery of the basic skills of endourology. During the first year, fellows will focus on clinical mastery of percutaneous stone access, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, ureteroscopy and HoLEP. The fellows will work with Dr. Rivera and other staff endourologists as well as the senior fellows.

During this time, the fellow is allotted one research day a week, one clinic day and three operative days. Call is one weekend a month as Chief Call aiding the junior resident with a staff member as backup.

Second-Year Curriculum

During the second the year, fellows have more dedicated block research time (2-3 days a week) and independent operating room time. Time in the operating room is as a junior staff member performing procedures independently with staff as backup.

Fellows are expected to participate in a basic science project. The background for the project should be developed in year one. The fellow also takes staff call during the second year, which is approximately one day every ten days with one weekend every two months.
