Andrology and Male Sexual Medicine Clinical Care

Urology faculty experts provide clinical care for a variety of men’s sexual health and andrology issues through the Indiana University School of Medicine’s partnership with Indiana University Health. In this specialty, Department of Urology faculty focus on a holistic approach to patient care by not only treating their sexual health or reproductive concerns, but also finding potential underlying conditions that could be causing sexual problems, such as depression, high blood pressure or diabetes.

For many patients, these can be difficult or uncomfortable issues to talk about. Our faculty physicians work to develop a relationship with patients to make them as comfortable as possible and may even encourage them to include their partner, if they have one, in their treatment plans.

Sexual Health Conditions

Male sexual health conditions treated by urologists in this specialty include a variety of issues, such as erectile dysfunction, low libido, premature ejaculation and Peyronie’s disease, which is a curvature in the penis. These sexual dysfunctions can significantly impact a man’s quality of life both physically and emotionally. Treatment options range from medical therapies to surgical therapies, depending on the severity of the condition.

Male Infertility

Urology faculty specializing in male reproductive medicine provide treatment for male infertility. Fifty percent of couples experiencing difficulty conceiving are often experiencing difficulty because of a treatable male infertility issue. Problems like varicoceles can be surgically treated. Other procedures to improve sperm to allow for natural conception or assisted-reproductive technologies also exist.

Fertility Preservation

Fertility preservation is available for those with health conditions such as cancer that could damage their fertility. Urologists provide fertility preservation prior to chemotherapy, surgeries, radiation or other treatments so that men or even young boys experiencing these conditions can still potentially conceive a child in the future.
